Intern Spotlight: Scott Lawton

School and Degree: University of Wisconsin-Madison | Computer and Electrical Engineering
Internship Focus: Microgrid Product Development Intern

About Scott

Scott is from Hudson, Wisconsin and earned his bachelor’s degree in applied physics and math from the University of Eau Claire. He is in his final year of graduate school at the University of Wisconsin-Madison completing his computer and electrical engineering degree. When Scott is not at work or school, he enjoys playing golf, being with friends, and playing games on the Xbox.

What made you want to intern for Design Ready Controls?

Scott has interned with Design Ready Controls for several years, having a wide range of internship experiences in electrical engineering and test & automation. His appreciation for the Design Ready Controls team and the experiences gained each summer continue to bring him back!

This year brings new excitement as Scott’s internship is focused on product development within the microgrid industry. Scott has recently become interested in renewable energy sources – microgrids tie in very closely with that. He is also hoping to continue to do research studies on microgrids when he goes back to school in the fall.

What do you like most about Design Ready Controls, why?

Along with the environment and people, Scott is inspired by the company’s software, “Everything that Design Ready Controls has created software-wise is customized and fully automated. Not many companies can say they have that level of intelligence and sophistication with their software, which is why Design Ready Controls stands apart” Scott explained.

What kinds of projects are you currently working on right now?

Currently, Scott is focused on one big project – designing the enclosures for a microgrid. He and the team are coming up with the schematics for the enclosure. To give perspective on size, this is not a small enclosure, it will be housing 39 industrial batteries. The summer goal is to have the design finalized, manufactured, and installed in full operation.

What are your next steps and how has your Design Ready Controls internship prepared you?

Scott is returning to the University of Wisconsin-Madison to complete his final year of graduate school and plans to graduate in the spring. Upon graduation, Scott will be looking for a job. “Interning at Design Ready Controls has sharpened my CAD skills and taught me to think ‘outside of the box’. I am very excited for my future and the opportunities ahead.”
